It's easy to fall back to a simple and yet elegant dress.
Or you can go all out in style if the event asks for it.
Looking stylish under the moonlight is a concern for many fashion sensible women who are not afraid to endlessly obsess about the perfect combination that will make them the target for all the lustful looks. For the business woman trying to make just the right impression or going for the last stretch to push that proposal or finish the sale, however, dressing well is much more important than getting the right brand of party supplies. It's hard to actually look stylish while still maintaining an image of professionalism, but with our insider tips, you'll make it look easy.
As we mentioned before, the trick to dressing properly for a business party lies in finding the right combination of makeup, accessories and a fancy dress that make you look both festive but also professional. Every party is different but we've distilled a foolproof method that should get you through the ordeal without breaking a sweat.
First of all, inform yourself of the dress code. Depending on the type of party and the formality of the whole affair your clothing options might be more or less limited. A formal affair calls for cocktail or evening dresses and is a great opportunity to show off your glimmer. If you're feeling adventurous try something like silk or brocade to really make an impression. If an after work cocktail meeting is what you're going to, you're safest with a less formal attire (probably shorter as well) that does without all the glitter and shimmer of the evening gowns.
Once found out about the type of engagement you're going to, it's time to look at your closet and decide if there is anything there that fits the bill. Remember to be cold and critical about it, if what you have clashes with the style of the party or meeting, make a mental note and don't be tempted to rationalize why it will be ok to wear one of those sexy costumes that have been sitting in the back of your closet (and your mind) to a business meeting.
On the other hand, don't overlook simple solutions. Sometimes a black dress or suit that you already own will fit the bill nicely. Another option is to take something that you already have and tweak it for maximum performance by purchasing new types of accessories that complement it. Scarves, handbags, jewelry and even belts can really change the look of a piece so make sure you think through your options before deciding that you absolutely need to buy a new dress.
Surprise engagements and meetings can happen to the best of us. Reality is, however, that most of those last minute panic attacks related to what to wear in your super important business party could have been avoided if you had taken the time to plan for the event. If possible, and specially if you've decided you do need a new dress, start looking weeks prior to the date of the event.
If everything fails choose to underdress rather than overdress. Looking professional trumps being the fashion queen (except if that is your line of work of course) in the business world everyday. If you are really clueless about what you can wear and asking your coworkers has not helped, go for simplicity and elegance.
